Star Trek's Sulu asks why is Utah's governor being so mean?

Noted gay rights activist and social media socialite George Takei is headed to Utah this week for the Sundance premiere of To Be Takei, a feature length documentary about his life. Ahead of his trip, Takei spoke candidly with The Salt Lake Tribune about—you guessed it—the state’s recent flip-flopping on marriage equality.
“Why is your Governor Gary Herbert so mean?”, he asked repeatedly in a phone interview:

"Your governor seems to believe in governing by hysteria. Governor Herbert is consciously bringing harm to 2,600 citizens of Utah. That’s mean-spirited. He didn’t have to do that. Your governor is trying to put toothpaste back in the tube."

Earlier this month, Gov. Herbert announced that he would no longer recognize the marriages of more than 1,300 gay and lesbian couples who were *legally* married in the state during its short-lived two weeks of marriage equality.
Marriage equality in the state is now “on hold until further notice,” or, as soon as the US Supreme Court tells Utah the exact same thing it told the entire country last June—that discrimination is unconstitutional.
